Don’t cut the mature trees in the Buffalo River headwaters

Don’t cut the mature trees in the Buffalo River headwaters

Do you care about trees? Most of us do. Activists from Newton County report that the Forest Service policy of clearing mature trees in the headwaters of the upper Buffalo promises to be extremely dangerous to the purity of the water and safety for the drinking water of people who live along the river. It’s a commitment to profit that says the value of mature trees is only measured in dollars from loggers. It does not take into account the environmental services that trees – especially the fully grown trees – make in purifying the air, the waters, and protecting against climate disruption.

Please contact the National Forest Service office in Arkansas, headed by Michael Mulford, and tell him the value you see in saving the remaining mature forests of Arkansas. Especially in the upper Buffalo where the pure water is part of our pride in our beautiful state.

Here is Michael Mulford’s email. He’s reported to be a friendly sort of man who would prefer to save the trees if he could. Receiving many letters from Arkansans might encourage the Forest Service to reconsider.
