Two record-setting destructive storms fueled by climate change
On October 28, Hurricane Melissa struck the island of Jamaica with winds of 185 mph– equal to the worst hurricane winds to ever strike land. Super-charged by the ocean and the atmosphere both having been made warmer by climate change, the storm affected some 1.5 million people in Jamaica and caused damages estimated at 10 billion dollars – which is equal to roughly half of the nation’s annual GDP.
The day before, record-setting torrential rains struck Vietnam. In 24 hours,
parts of the city of Hue experienced 5 feet, 7 inches of rain! Again, causing immense damage.
A resource from the RC Community
As Diane Shisk wrote: “The next few years are a critical time for action on the climate emergency. We all want to stay informed, stay hopeful, and stay active. To help with that, RC has developed a resource: What’s Happening with the Climate? <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Puj4YXeBtpfS6DZuUFYXG5zL2oVP3iZECTfeXE7XwW4/edit#heading=h.9dz7msxy1o5e> Check it out!
It has updates on “The Good News” and “The Bad News,” with a short summary and a link to more information if you want to go deep. Great conversation starters, stories to take to our sessions, and examples of actions people are taking in other places.”
