Robert’s Gap Burn and Development Project Arkansas Forest Service needs citizen input. This is watershed for the Buffalo River. The runoff is already damaging our iconic waterway. AFS is not considering all the consequences for the river or the people who depend on the watershed.
Gordon Watkins of the Buffalo River Watershed Alliance will discuss the US Forest Service’s Robert’s Gap Project.
Robert’s Gap is a 40,000 acre, 60 square mile USFS tract encompassing the headwaters of not only the Buffalo National River, but also the White, Kings and Mulberry Rivers and War Eagle Creek and is adjacent to the Upper Buffalo Wilderness Area.
The USFS (Forest Service) action plan includes over 70 miles of road construction, 12,000 acres of timber harvesting, over 10,000 acres of prescribed burning, and over 3,000 acres of herbicide treatment. The Buffalo River Watershed Alliance is concerned about the scope, scale and cumulative impacts of the project on water quality and on endangered species and has requested an Environmental Impact Study. USFS has declined. Implementation of the project is expected to begin this fall.
