Plastic bags and Walmart: Some Facts

Ellen Bruce, Fayetteville

It is estimated that 4 trillion plastic bags are used each year; 100 billion of them are used in the U.S.

They do not degrade. They are found everywhere on earth, from the oceans to Mt. Everest, to the bellies of whales, seals and dolphins.

Walmart has an estimated 230 million visits each week to its stores which number 4,742 in the U.S. an 10,593 worldwide.

Seven states (California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New York, Oregon and Vermont) have outlawed plastic grocery bags. Walmart has over 800 stores in those states, providing groceries without plastic bags.

Walmart is boasting that they are working to “go beyond the bag”, testing innovative alternatives to plastic bags but they are doing so only in those states that do not allow plastid bags. Walmart needs to speed up the process and move it to all the stores in its enterprise. Arkansas should be the flagship of Walmart’s efforts.

Please join me in writing personal letters to Walmart asking them to fix this problem in ALL their stores. Doug McMillan is the CEO of Walmart. Kathleen McLaughlin is Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer of the company. The address is 702 S.W 8th Street, Bentonville, AR 72716.
