Dear friends, This Saturday at 11 A.M. in front of the Washington County Courthouse in Fayetteville, the OMNI Center & Arkansas Nonviolence Alliance will be protesting the growing war on Iran. This protest is part of nationwide day of action in many cities across the nation.
President Trump just assassinated top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by a drone strike at an airport in Baghdad, Iraq. Make no mistake; this act of illegal aggression is an “explicit act of war”, and war with Iran threatens to be catastrophic. As U.S. General Anthony Zinni said, “If you liked Iraq, you will love Iran.” This grave situation is already spiraling out of control with Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei warning “harsh retaliation is waiting.” The dangers of this war cannot be overestimated. Like Iraq, a million or more men, women & children will likely be killed, with millions more left wounded or made refugees, etc. Like Iraq, this war will cost trillions more that would be better spent on clean energy. However, the greatest threat is that this war could turn into a broader world war, dragging in the many other nations already experiencing aggressive U.S. warfare, particularly nuclear armed Russia, China, etc. Journalist Dan Cohen writes, “The US has effectively declared war on Iran, which has established militarily ties with Russia and China. It’s not hyperbole to say this could start WW3….Iran, Russia and China held joint naval drills less than a week ago.”
We must remember: Nobody wins in nuclear winter. Millions, if not billions, of lives are hanging in the balance at this perilous moment. We must rise up and shout from the rooftops: NO MORE WAR!
