OMNI NEWSLETTER: EVENTS, ACTIONS, COMMENT

APRIL  23,   2006, CREATING A CULTURE OF PEACE

COMING EVENTS

APRIL 23, SUNDAY, 7PM, VIDEO UNDERGROUND, DOCUMENTARY “THE TAKE”
In suburban Buenos Aires, thirty unemployed auto-parts workers walk into their idle factory, roll out sleeping mats and refuse to leave. Armed only with slingshots and an abiding faith in shop-floor democracy, the workers face off against the bosses, bankers and a whole system that sees their beloved factories as nothing more than scrap metal for sale.

April 25, Tuesday, FHS students will read their work at 7p.m. at monthly Ozark Poets and Writers Collective at Arsaga’s Crossover.

April 25, “Invisible Children,” doc. film on child soldiers in Ugandan Army, 6pm, UA Ballroom.

APRIL 25, 6PM, OMNI, ANTI-WAR MEETING.
Scott Ritter, the UN inspector who reported the truth of no wmd in Iraq before the invasion and did everything in his power to stop the invasion, including speaking before the Iraqi Parliament, has written a sobering analysis of the peace movement.   Despite all our efforts, “America still remains very much a nation not only engaged in waging and planning wars of aggression, but has also become a nation which increasingly identifies itself through its military and the wars it fights.”  He asks people to cease being complicit in the US Warfare State, quit claiming we are for peace but support the war system or do nothing, and to focus on opposing the US corporate-White House-Pentagon-Congressional-Mainstream Media Complex.  So OMNI has arranged a meeting to discuss how we might make our protest more effective.   This nation invaded Iraq illegally and occupies it illegitimately, and it is preparing to attack Iran.  Let us focus our minds and hearts to oppose this administration’s aggressions..

University St. off Dickson in Fayetteville.     Dr. Jon Johnson, associate professor from the Walton College of Business, University of Arkansas, is the featured speaker. FAYETTEVILLE

NEW BOOK FOR PEACE

Cliff Mikkelson’s Gospel of One/Letters of Aul (Trafford) is available from the author.  From the opening paragraph:  “The gospel of the oneness of all life….means to follow the golden rule….to feel your kinship with all life.”  A great, ancient teaching for peace.

CONNECTING THOMAS PAINE TO PEACE AND JUSTICE

Only with Peace and Justice will we have a future - "We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive." ...Einstein. Science, in spite of all the technological devices that have improved our lives, is taking a back seat to mysticism. There is a reciprocal connection between science and societal structuring. It is documented in the textbook “WORLD HISTORY- Patterns of Interaction” 1999.   And there is a connection between the monumental change in societal structuring that Paine had a major influence upon and his interest and use of science. This recognition can be given a jump start by having a State of Arkansas Resolution enacted to proclaim every January 29 as Thomas Paine Day. I'll tell you how this can be done, by your help, if you will e-mail me at b4ethics@yahoo.com    Cordially, Jack Makens

FAYETTEVILLE NEEDS?

Fayetteville Alderman to Move Ahead with Street Improvement Bond” (TMN 4-16).  Council to ask for $14.3 million bond issue for streets, even though voters rejected the past 3 special elections aimed at raising taxes, included the latest for the library.   Our streets should have a high priority?

TELL YOUR PEACE STORIES

TMN  week after week  calls for heroizing warriors.  Let us share stories of peace and justice-makers.  500 words, photos encouraged, include your email or phone, and send to Dick.

GAME SIMULATION FOR POLITICAL ACTIVISTS

“A Force More Powerful”: simulating nonviolent ways to gain  political power, you create strategies to overthrow dictators, illegal elections, or influence political leaders.   Rev. ADG  by the Schwabachs (4-10).

WOODROW ANDERSON, CONG. BOOZMAN OPPONENT

See TMN article on Anderson’s talk at Sr. Democrats 4-18: had difficulty listing the ways he differed from Boozman.   If we wish to replace the warmonger, Constitution-hating Bush clone Boozman, we must begin with educating his opponent.  Will you lead us, create a campaign?

CORPORATE CRIME: TYSON FOODS fined $ 4 million damages in a S.D. court because it “knowingly used [gov’t.] pricing errors to pay less for…cuts of beef, resulting in lost revenue for the cattlemen.”  TMN (4-13).  Tyson will appeal.  If you want to commit a crime and not go to jail, join a corporation.

NWA NEEDS:  HIGHWAYS $$$?

A plan to provide a blueprint for NWA trans. Spending through 2030,  est. to cost $1.9 billion, will be voted on Thurs. 4-20 by reps. of NWA Regional Planning Commission.   No mention was made of prevention, or any comparison to other NWA and Ark. needs.

NWA GRASSROOTS MILITARISM

“Veterans Wall Needs Help” (TMN 4-23).  Soliciting money for the “Veterans Wall of Honor” in Bella Vista, which celebrates all US vets and all US wars no matter how illegal, illegitimate, and dishonorable.

ARKANSAS

ARKANSAS NEEDS

--“Hungry in Arkansas” (NAT 4-1).  Ark. is third-hungriest in nation.  More evidence of the inability of charity to cope with people’s needs, esp. with the Bush Admin. reducing services.

--“Advocates: Mental Health system Getting Worn Out” (ADG4-13).  “Panel troubled by area’s lack of beds.”

--“Faculty Size Decreasing at University” (TMN 4-21): the number of UA faculty decreased “while the university continues setting student enrollment records.”

--“Energy Factors Indicate Pefect Storm” by Steve Barnes (TMN 4-21): energy costs rising, while “the poorest American families were already spending almost half their disposable incomes to pay utility bills.”  Only W. Va. is lower in median household income, and Arkies “actually lost ground to inflation.”  Many more sig. stats.

--“Technology Education Now a ‘A Quiet Crisis’” (TMN 4-23).  Urgent need for improvement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education for 21st Century.

USA, WORLD

USA Equestrian Comanche?

The good news: we know how to create a peaceful world.  “Conflict resolution, a social art highly developed in humans, offers alternative paths to justice that make unnecessary the violence of self-redress, feud, and war.”

The challenge:  “A central challenge of the 21st century is to extend to the international level—among nation-states—the types of conflict resolution and judicial procedures that effectively provide justice and keep the peace within democratic nation-states today.”

The obstacle: “…the seeking of justice through self-redress among the equestrian Comanche is ‘exactly comparable to that observed among nations which recongnize certain practices of international law, but which reserve to themselves the sovereign right to resort to force if things don’t suit them.’”   From The Human Potential for Peace  by Douglas Fry p. 112.

BUSH

Friends:          Pink (born Alecia Moore) is a 26-year-old pop singer.    This is a link to a site which plays the new Pink video of "Dr. Mr. President."       I think that it is worth viewing and listening.  –Carl              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FF0cS9s6Aw

STOP THE INVASION OF IRAN

The peace movement must try to prevent wars and not be merely reactive.   Evidence is growing that the Bush Admin. plans to bomb Iran, and in fact is already infiltrating the country.   OMNI should have a committee focused on this urgent matter, but the Steering Committee is already heavily committed.   Will you create the committee and get us vocal and visual?

---Pentagon Planned Iran Invasion in 2004 http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/041506X.shtml

British officers took part in a US war game aimed at preparing for a possible invasion of Iran, despite repeated claims by the foreign secretary, Jack Straw, that a military strike against Iran is inconceivable.

--IRAN AND BRAZIL: US CONTRADICTORY POLICIES

“Brazil Pursues Own Nuclear Future (TMN 4-21):  While “Iran faces international pressure over developing the raw material for nuiclear weapons, Brazil is quietly preparing to open its own uranium-enrichment center, capable of producing exactly the same fuel.”  That is, both countries might be able to produce more fuel than needed for nuclear power, the excess available for weapons, but the US is protesting only Iranian development.  Both Iran and Brazil have signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.   A very illuminating report by AP writer Peter Muello.  (A similar contradiction is even worse with our recent nuclear agreement with India.)

---IRANIANS HUMAN BEINGS

“Author Compiles Iranian Culture Reading List” TMN 4-23:  To know Iranians you must walk in their shoes, Azar Nafisi (Lolita in Teheran) says, and these books, articles, web sites, music, and films offer “the ways through which the Iranian people articulate and shape their experiences.”   Citizens of the US  will discover uniquenessES but also”how much they have in common with Iranians.”

--VIDEO | Military Families: From the Heart, A Film by Scott Galindez http://www.truthout.org/multimedia.htm

Mona Parsons and Tamara Rosenleaf share the pain that those of us without family and friends in the military will never know. Sometimes we forget that the numbers are real people. Mona and Tamara don't forget; their loved ones are in Iraq.

--VIDEO | Fourteen Arrested at Camp Casey

A Film by Scott Galindez

http://www.truthout.org/multimedia.htm

Determined to get their day in court, fourteen peace activists were arrested outside of George Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas.  Among those arrested were Daniel Ellsberg, Deedee Miller and Iraq war veteran Geoffrey Millard. Spokesperson Ann Wright said the group would continue to return to the site until their right to protest there is restored.

--Amy Goodman’s “Democracy Now” devoted an entire hour to exposing the Blackwater USA war profiteering contractor in Iraq.  4 of its employees were killed in Fallujah, and their relatives are suing Blackwater for contributing to their deaths.  One mother was on the program, and the author of The Nation article “Blood Is Thicker Than Blackwater.” See also“Private Warriors” by Frontline.  90,000 U.S. civilians are working for contractors in Iraq, and 6000 have been killed but not included in the casualty count.

WAR ON TERROR

-- FOCUS | Report: Rumsfeld Directed Sexual Degradation of Detainee http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/041506Z.shtml

“Salon” reports new evidence that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was intimately involved in prisoner abuse at the Guantanamo Bay detention center, including ordering the forcing of a detainee to strip naked, wear women's underwear and perform "dog tricks" on a leash.

TOXIC ROCKET fuel in bodies of most Americans

Reviewed by Nick Ramirez   The Bush Administration is delaying the release of a study showing that most Americans carry toxic rocket fuel in their bodies. Perchlorate, the explosive compound in solid rocket fuel, is a thyroid toxin that can disrupt normal growth and development in fetuses, infants and children. Perchlorate has contaminated drinking water, soil and food sources across the country, with most of the contamination coming from military bases and defense contractors.     http://www.commondreams.org/news2006/0303-08.htm   >From Project Censored

NUCLEAR WEAPONS: HELEN CALDICOTT

“Helen”s War: Portrait of a Dissident,” very well-made documentary of Caldicott’s campaign to abolish nuclear weapons.  She is the author of The New Nuclear Danger, about US militarization of outer space and development of new nuclear weapons.  Her org. is NPRI/Nuclear Policy Research Institute.  She has great (Jefferson/Madison) faith in our potential power as informed citizens.

MILITARISM/PATRIOTISM

USA Weekend 4/14-16 presents a long article of how well our wounded soldiers are doing back in the US.  “Back in the Race,” goes the headline.  “Patriots like Sgt. 1st Class Michael McNaughton are returning from war and to their favorite athletic pursuits—thanks to amzzing advances in today’s prosthetic technology.”  And other stories of the maimed happily returning to their old athletics.   Now let’s see: what is omitted?

--Last days of the Ocean?  Reviewed by Charlene Jones

Oceanic problems once found on a local scale are now pandemic. Data from physical oceanography, marine biology, meteorology, fisheries science, and glaciology assert the seas are changing in every way. The world ocean is growing warmer and atmospheric litter has altered its chemistry radically. Thousands of toxic compounds poison marine creatures and devastate propagation, creating dead zones and laying waste to coastal nurseries, coral reefs and kelp forests. Reckless fishing practices have ramped up, dredged ocean bottoms, and driven species toward extinction. Human failure in governance of the world's largest public domain threatens critical elements of the global life-support system.   http://www.motherjones.com/news/featurex/2006/03/oceans_index.html   >From Project Censored
