Climate Moment

Australian climate activists blockade world’s largest coal port

“Rising Tide” climate activists recently caused a temporary suspension of shipping at the world’s largest coal port in Newcastle. More than 100 kayaks blocked the shipping channel as part of several days of protest actions that led to 173 arrests.

A few days later, in a coordinated act of civil disobedience, hundreds of protesters blocked the road to Parliament in Canberra, leading to more arrests.

The protesters are calling on the government to immediately cancel all new fossil fuel projects and end all coal exports from Newcastle by 2030. It is also calling on the government to introduce a 78% tax on coal export profits to fund the transition to renewable energy and support fossil fuel workers.
