Climate ralliers throng cities, call for change  Compiled by Democrat-Gazette staff from wire reports | 11-30-19

story.lead_photo.captionThousands of young people attend a rally staged by the Fridays for Future movement in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

BERLIN — Protesters in cities across the world staged rallies Friday demanding leaders take tougher action to address climate change.

More than 2,400 cities in 158 countries took part in demonstrations, according to the Fridays for Future network. Greenpeace, Extinction Rebellion and other nongovernmental organizations also held protests.

While hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated around the world — including an estimated 630,000 in Germany alone — the rallies drew far fewer attendees than the “climate strikes” held in September. Organizers noted that it was exam season for many of the young people most likely to rally.

The rallies kicked off in Australia, where people affected by recent devastating wildfires joined young environmentalists protesting the government’s pro-coal stance.

Janet Reynolds said she had gone to the rally in Sydney after losing everything in an “inferno, an absolute firestorm that raced through my property.”

“It’s so unnatural that I started investigating, reading science and really exploring what’s happening with climate change,” she told Australian television.

Student Daisy Jeffrey said protesters attended to help raise money for those affected by the fires and to demand action from the government

“People have lost their homes, people have lost their lives,” she said. “We have to ask: How far does this have to go before our government finally takes action?”

Teenage activist Greta Thunberg sent a message of support to protesters.

“Everyone’s needed. Everyone’s welcome. Join us,” she said on Twitter.

Thunberg, who started her one-woman “climate strikes” in Sweden more than a year ago, is traveling across the Atlantic by sailboat to attend the latest global conference, which this year will take place in [COP] Madrid. She has drawn a following around the world and inspired thousands more students to regularly skip school on Fridays [STRIKE]  and join climate protests — hence the name Fridays for Future. . . . BLACK FRIDAY A TARGET

In Italy, France and South Africa, environmental protesters also targeted Black Friday with a protest they dubbed #BlockFriday.

“Big brands are offering discounts on consumer items to encourage us to buy things we would normally not buy. We need to change this unsustainable model,” Fridays for Future Italia said in a statement.

According to organizers, more than 300,000 people took part in Italy’s demonstrations, including 30,000 in Rome, 25,000 in Milan and 10,000 each in Turin and Naples.

In France, the protesters blockaded Amazon warehouses in Lyon and Saint-Priest.

In South Africa, a few dozen people with signs saying “Not Cool” and “Stop Pollution Now” protested outside the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in the summer heat of the Southern Hemisphere. MORE ON AFRICA

Occupy 2011

NOTE 2012 I INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING ON BLACK FRIDAY IN THE THANKSGIVING NEWSLETTER

Buy Nothing Day 2012 is November 23

Take a stand against consumerism, skip the Black Friday sales and honor Buy Nothing Day.

Fri, Nov 16 2012 at 8:00 AM EST

It’s that time of year again. The time of year when shoppers waiting in line for the best bargains often bring out the worst in each other. Stories of trampled shoppers, fistfights and more are shared alongside stories of $1 DVDs and $5 board games. Yes, I’m describing Black Friday. This year I challenge you to take a stand against consumerism, skip the Black Friday sales and honor Buy Nothing Day instead.

Buy Nothing Day is November 23 but the organization behind the movement, AdBusters, wants you to turn a 24-hour statement against rampant consumerism into an entire Buy Nothing Christmas. Buy Nothing Day has been active for more than two decades but last year AdBusters changed it up a bit and aligned the day with Occupy Wall Street and the #OccupyXmas movement was born.

“Go cold turkey from consumer culture completely! Like those who have accepted this magical invitation before you, you may be rewarded with a life-changing shift of perspective – a glimpse into how to consume less and live more on this precarious Planet of ours … And then take the next step, stretch out the joy of Buy Nothing Day by getting your family together and deciding to celebrate Xmas differently this year.” Source: AdBusters

I’ve participated in Buy Nothing Day several times but I’ve never managed to go all out and celebrate a no-gift Christmas. Instead, I try to shop locally owned small business and give gifts of experience and time instead of just consumable items.

This year I will do the same, skip the shopping malls again and cozy up with my family on the Friday after Thanksgiving. How about you? Will you be a willing Buy Nothing Day participant or an #OccupyXmas supporter?

Occupy Black Friday: An Antidote to the Guns, Pepper Spray, and Madness of This Shopping “Holiday”

It is not even noon on the East Coast, and this year’s Black Friday shenanigans already include:

–A woman pepper spraying fellow shoppers at a California Wal-Mart

–Security guards pepper spraying shoppers at a North Carolina Wal-Mart

–Someone firing a gun at a North Carolina shopping mall

–Someone shooting another person in the parking lot of another California Wal-Mart

–An armed robbery attempt in South Carolina

–A fight at the jewelery counter of a Florida Wal-Mart

Another fight, this time in the electronics department of a New York Wal-Mart

–Plus the madness of stores opening for Black Friday on Thursday

Is it just me, or is this one of the craziest Black Fridays ever?

As an antidote to all that, here’s a more positive story, via Raw Story:

Protesters plan to Occupy Black Friday

Across the U.S. on Black Friday, activists in the Occupy movement are urging boycotts of big chain stores.

At least 150 protesters were gathering outside Macy’s flagship store in Manhattan for an anti-fur rally.

In Seattle, protesters were carpooling to Wal-Mart stores. Occupy Seattle is encouraging shoppers to patronize small business or give homemade gifts.

Occupy D.C. was calling for donations to a “really, really free market” so that others can go shopping for free.

Flash mobs were planned in Iowa. And in Chicago, protesters will sing Christmas carols asking shoppers to buy local.

All of these actions are part of Occupy Black Friday, which seeks to “hit the corporations that corrupt and control American politics where it hurts, their profits.” Find more info on the action’s Facebook page.
