Wealth of the global 1% keeps growing

Wealth of the global 1% keeps growing The richest 1 percent of the world’s population have accumulated an additional $33.9 trillion since the Paris Climate agreements in 2015. Some are noting that even a small portion of this would be sufficient to pay the fair share climate finance needed by the Global South.
Taxing fossil fuel companies could also generate the large amounts needed to meet people’s needs.
A resource from the RC Community As Diane Shisk wrote: “The next few years are a critical time for action on the climate emergency. We all want to stay informed, stay hopeful, and stay active. To help with that, RC has developed a resource:  What’s Happening with the Climate? <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Puj4YXeBtpfS6DZuUFYXG5zL2oVP3iZECTfeXE7XwW4/edit#heading=h.9dz7msxy1o5e> Check it out! It has updates on “The Good News” and “The Bad News,” with a short summary and a link to more information if you want to go deep. Great conversation starters, stories to take to our sessions, and examples of actions people are taking in other places.”
For the Climate Nerds Among Us… Gratitude for the Warriors! I know that not everybody on this list is a climate nerd. But some of you are, so this is for you. This case was a big deal in the Hague, but of course we heard nothing about it here.
An environmental lawyer friend named Teraine Okpoko, who works on a global level, sent a letter for Thanksgiving. He used to attend the Climate Change Book Forum by zoom, and he sent a lovely card wishing all of us a good holiday.
Teraine worked on a case between Shell Oil and the Netherlands called Shell Plc v. Milieudefensie et al. The outcome was for that court to decide that fossil fuels companies had responsibility for their impacts on people and planet.… Wow. That’s the super-simple version of that. Of course Shell did not like that outcome, so there are continuing repercussions. Teraine’s letter gives some updated history that some of you might find really interesting.
I wanted to share a link to the letter, but Constant Contact won’t link to a PDF. If any like-minded nerds would like to see the follow-up to the Milieudefensie case, please reply and I’ll send it to you personally. So sorry about that.
The important point is that there are still MANY positive things continuing in the fight to change the death spiral we seem to be in. It’s important that we all know who the warriors are on every level – local to global – and send them some love.
Thank you Teraine, and all those in the fight with you. Thankful for all of you!
