Vickie Tidwell – Peace Hero 2008Junior Auxilliary and other organizations Jonesboro Nominated by Myra Buhrmeister and Rennell Woods Vickie Tidwell represents the deepest values of traditional Arkansas, even though she really hales from Kentucky. That means a strong commitment to family and community. Vickie was born in Louisville, Kentucky, where most of her family still lives. She attended the University of Oklahoma and received her BS in Business Education from Southern Nazarene University. Her husband, Dr. Kenneth Tidwell, is with her tonight. The Tidwell family moved to Jonesboro in 1990, where Vickie quickly found meaningful professional and volunteer work that met her need to contribute to the welfare of her new home. She attributes her life of service to her mother’s example. In their home they watched Mom serve the community and the church in many different ways, and she encouraged her children to do the same. Vickie remembers many lemonade stands whose proceeds went to support a good cause. Vickie‘s resume includes three pages of details on groups she has taken leadership in, ranging through health, education, welfare and community betterment. One group in particular is dear to her heart – one that Omni friends learned about last year when its charming young director, Rennell Woods, received this award. That’s City Youth Ministries, a dynamic support program for children and youth in Jonesboro. Maybe Vickie will give us an update about work City Youth is doing this year. BB Vickie says “Sometimes people gravitate toward helping those it’s easy to love – who get along, and play nice. That’s easy. I think Jesus told us we need to look for those it’s harder to love. They need it the most, and they deserve it too.” One of Vickie’s nominators, Myra Buhrmeister, says about Vickie: “Vickie Tidwell is a woman of passion. She puts 110 percent into everything she undertakes. Vickie’s life is in helping others… she wants them to succeed in life. She’s accomplished so much… when she was elected national president of Junior Auxiliary she knew it was a big undertaking. Auxiliary members help children of the area, whether it be tutoring, medical needs, clothing, or just being there to listen. Being there for the children is the biggest passion she has. Ever since it was established, one of Vickie’s main projects has been City Youth Ministries. When it comes to service, Vickie is there. She’s usually behind the scenes, but you know she’s there, and always with a smile.” Omni Center is very proud to honor Vickie Tidwell as an Arkansas Peace & Justice Hero. Nominating Statement: Vickie Tidwell is a woman of passion. She puts 110 percent into everything she undertakes. Vickie's life is helping others. She wants others to succeed in life. When she was elected national president of Junior Auxiliary she knew it was a big undertaking. She has accomplished so much. Junior Auxiliary members assist in helping children of the area, whether it be tutoring, medical needs, clothing or just being there to listen. One of Vickie's main projects has been to establish CityYouth Ministries. She has served on the board and volunteered in every aspect. CityYouth is a place where young people can go for after school and summer programs for tutoring, computer lessons, choir practice, sports and friendship. It’s been important to Jonesboro to do something to help the kids after the school shootings happened several years ago. Vickie’s volunteer activities are too numerous to mention. When it comes to being a volunteer, Vickie is there. She is usually behind the scenes, but you know she is there and always with a smile. Myra Buhrmester Jonesboro Sun |
