Patsy Brewer – Peace Hero 2008
Nominated by Marion Orton

Habitat’s purpose is to help low income persons earn skills to help build and care for a home. The local Washington County Habitat for Humanity is 15 years old. Patsy had experience elsewhere with Habitat when they moved here, and shortly became part time and then full time director. This year, 2008, they have built 40 houses. In 2005 when Springdale asked for help they built 7 while a merged organization. Fayetteville City Community Development helps Fayetteville with land acquisition. The University of Arkansas Community Design Center has worked with Habitat, and all are excited about the “Green” Habitat Neighborhood, to be built (see news article). Patsy has the ability to organize and direct people of diverse education, race, social background, temperament, skills, and age, with the result of a livable home for a happy family. These families will divorce, lose jobs, have neighbor problems, etc. Patsy deals with it all. Patsy has helped other cities to get better organized. She says the most fun for everyone was when Fayetteville built 3 houses, which were “woman built.” That’s right – the crews were all women. Patsy is also a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Lights of the Ozarks Committee, Rotary, Contractors and Developers, and Presbyterian Church.
