George Arnold – Peace Hero 2008 Opinion Editor, Northwest Edition Arkansas Democrat Gazette George Arnold is a familiar byline to Arkansas Democrat Gazette readers. As Opinion Editor, his work has been an interesting staple of the Editorial Page for several years. A topic that has touched him deeply is the tragic situation in Darfur, Sudan. His writing has been important and valuable in publicizing issues from the area. Until reporters like George began talking about the conflict, the killing had gone on unnoticed for three years. His work has kept the crisis from fading out of public view in Arkansas. Writing like this also helps to keep pressure on the Sudanese government, and world leaders, to find effective ways to resolve the situation. Genocide scholar Sam Totten, who received a Peace Heroes Award last year for his research detailing atrocities in Darfur, has followed George’s writing with gratitude. He nominated him for his thoughtful and well-informed discussion of this difficult issue. Omni Center, and Arkansas, are pleased to recognize this excellent work.
